چکیده

Rumor mongering (also known as gossip) is an epidemiological protocol that implements broadcasting with a reliability that can be very high. Rumor mongering is attractive because it is generic, scalable, adapts well to failures and recoveries, and has a reliability that gracefully degrades with the number of failures in a run. However, rumor mongering uses random selection for communications. We study the impact of using random selection in this paper. We present a protocol that super cially resembles rumor mongering but is deterministic. We show that this new protocol has most of the same attractions as rumor mongering. The one attraction that rumor mongering has|namely graceful degradation|comes at a high cost in terms of the number of messages sent. We compare the two approaches both at an abstract level and in terms of how they perform in an Ethernet and small wide area network of Ethernets.

Reliable Gossip Zone for Real-Time Communications in Wireless Sensor Networks

Gossip is a well-known protocol which was proposed to implement broadcast service with a high reliability in an arbitrarily connected network of sensor nodes. The probabilistic techniques employed in gossip have been used to address many challenges which are caused by flooding in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, very little work has yet been done on real-time wireless sensor networks w...

JetStream: Achieving Predictable Gossip Dissemination by Leveraging Social Networks Principles

Gossip protocols provide probabilistic reliability and scalability, but their inherent randomness may lead to high variation in (received) message overheads at different nodes. This paper presents techniques that leverages simple social networks principles to enable nodes to select gossip targets intelligently. These simple heuristics achieve a more uniform message overhead at each node, while ...

On Collaborative Information Spreading via Randomized Gossip

P2P networks are becoming increasingly used for wide-scale collaborative information spreading over the Internet. Thus, the ability to share information with large group of network nodes at near-optimal cost may be the one step that will allow P2P networks to replace traditional broadcast. For large groups, there are substantial inefficiencies that result from using deterministic tree-based app...

Monitoring Neighborhood Self-organization and Message Dissemination for Monitoring Large-scale Distributed Systems

In order to successfully monitor a large-scale distributed system, it is an important issue that the monitoring function fully covers all the entities in the system. To this end, a key challenge is to efficiently transmit state information of the entities in the system. This paper solves this challenge from two aspects. First, in virtue of the idea of self-organizing networks, this paper propos...

Dynamic Probabilistic Retransmission in Ad Hoc Networks

Ad Hoc networks are self-organizing wireless networks, absent any fixed infrastructure. Nodes in such networks communicate through radio transmissions of limited range, sometimes requiring the use of intermediate nodes to reach a destination. Nodes in ad hoc networks are also limited in their power supply and wireless bandwidth. Node mobility further complicates the environment. A communication...
